We began SUPing on Catalina Island in 1974. Back then, just off Pleasure Pier, they rented paddleboards. Most people sat on them and paddled around the harbor in Avalon.
Those of us with a bit of surf or skateboard background figured out quickly that the long wooden boards could have fun and exercise on ust stable enough to stand up and paddle.
